In 2009, The Home Depot Canada and Evergreen are pleased to support the following organizations in their work to rebuild nature through environmental restoration and stewardship projects.

Centre for Long-term Action in Newfoundland and Labrador, St. John’s, Newfoundland
St. John’s Safer Soil Project – Lead Safe Yard Program and Sustainable Soil Program
These programs will be expanding on a project that addresses high lead levels in city soil. Activities include soil-testing, community outreach, and the construction of raised bed gardens and phytoremediation beds. A "Liquid Solar" greenhouse will also be built as a demonstration site and will enable year-round food production.

Middlesex Stewardship Council, Aylmer, Ontario
Building Community Capacity for Long Term Management of Tallgrass Prairie on Public Lands
Retired farmland is being restored into tallgrass prairie. In addition to planting native species, MSC will host a prescribed burning course and acquire equipment to build the capacity within the community of volunteers and the local Volunteer Fire Departments to conduct prescribed burns in the future.

Society of Grasslands Naturalists-Medicine Hat Interpretive Program, Medicine Hat, Alberta
Native Plants for Police Point Park Nature Centre
Gardens around the Nature Centre will be revived through the construction of new benches, invasive species removal and native species plantings that will become examples of “backyard habitat” featured in some of the centre’s interpretation.

Friends of the Rouge Watershed Inc., Scarborough, Ontario
Restoration of Priority Rouge Park Sites
This project will involve student and community volunteers in the restoration of native vegetation and habitat surrounding the recently created Reesor Wetland. Habitat for species at risk will be created, including the building of three new frog ponds, nesting boxes and an osprey nesting platform.

North Central Community Association, Regina, Saskatchewan
Community Gardens
Vacant urban lots will be converted into community gardens where native plants and vegetables will be available to everyone in the community under the philosophy “help yourself.” The project builds food growing capacity of local residents and follows the practices of Crime Prevention through Environmental Design.

Nature Conservancy of Canada, Fredericton, New Brunswick
Musquash Estuary Nature Preserve Trail Project
As part of a larger project to construct and maintain a trail system in the Musquash Estuary Nature Preserve, boardwalks will be built along the Five Fathom Hole coastal hiking trail and a bridge will be constructed on the Black Beach Trail.

Hope for Wildlife Society, Seaforth, Nova Scotia
Wildlife Community Garden
A native wildlife garden will serve to build a strong connection between people and wildlife. Native plant species, birdhouses and bat boxes will provide food and shelter to indigenous wildlife species, and several built elements will further educate and connect people to the local wildlife, including the construction of a deer-viewing tower.

GAMIING Centre for Sustainable Lakeshore Living Inc., Kawartha Lakes, Ontario
Shelter for Education and Demonstration Project
A strawbale shelter will be constructed for educational and demonstration purposes at the GAMIING native plant nursery. The building process will be used as an opportunity to showcase strawbale construction.

Assiniboine Watershed Network, Winnipeg, Manitoba
Bruce Park Butterfly Garden
A native plant garden will be constructed to provide habitat for butterflies within an urban park and will raise awareness of the vital role played by native prairie plant species.

L’Alliance pour une Gestion Intégré et Responsible du basin versant de la rivière du Diable (AGIR pour la Diable), Saint-Faustin-Lac-Carré, Québec
2009 Riparian Restoration Project in the Diable River Watershed
This restoration project will increase biodiversity, limit soil erosion and protect the aquatic environment which has been exposed to development in the Diable River Watershed. Restoration workshops will be held that will give an opportunity for volunteers to learn about the restoration process and help with cleanup and planting.

Conseil Régional de l’Environnement et du Développement Durable de l’Outaouais (CREDDO), Gatineau, Québec
Révégetalisation de la forêt du Lac Beauchamp
This project aims to protect and restore a section of forest in Lac Beauchamp park that is classified as an exceptional forest ecosystem. Invasive species will be removed and native species will be planted on-site with a particular focus on limiting the number of beaten foot paths through the forest.

Arbor Day 2009
Arbor Day activities engage school children in a day outing to a local park, including a hands-on tree planting and a “wild” walk through the woods with an arborist to teach the children about the value of trees.

Tree planting events are planned to bring together people of all ages from all areas of the community.

The project will create a welcoming green space in a local park by building up trails, a natural playground and community meeting areas.

Life Cycle’s Project Society, Victoria, British Columbia
Springridge Common Place Making
This project will create an outdoor meeting place in an urban garden. Construction of cob benches, a table, and a gazebo will take place through a series of natural building workshops and interpretive signage will highlight edible plants in the garden.

Greening Our Parks
Five conservation areas throughout the Rideau Valley Watershed will be planted with 1,112 native trees and shrubs.

71 native trees will be planted in the RV Park as part of a larger plan to restore Chippewa Park.

Planting 526 native trees and shrubs will improve forest conditions in the Sydenham River Watershed.

Community volunteers will plant 550 native trees and shrubs at two sites in Kawartha Lakes.

Forests for Tomorrow: Earth Day Plantings 2009
As part of larger wetland conservation plans, 2,100 native trees and shrubs will be planted at Lynde Shores Conservation area and 600 native trees will be planted at Bowmanville/Westside Marshes Conservation Area.

Partners in Parks Naturalization Projects
429 native trees and shrubs will be planted by community groups at five sites throughout the Laurel Creek Subwatershed.

SeaChange Marine Conservation Society, Brentwood Bay, British Columbia
Care of the Gorge Water Monitoring Program
An environmental education program teaches youth about their local watershed, using both technology and hands-on activities. Students will be trained to monitor the water quality and life of the Gorge at the newly opened Gorge Waterway Discovery Centre.

Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation, Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia
LaHave Water Rescue Project
A public awareness campaign aims to reduce stressors on the LaHave river system. Education and outreach materials will be developed, along with more targeted presentations and one-on-one consultations. A water quality monitoring component will focus on fifteen sites in the watershed.

Cambridge City Green Strategy, Cambridge, Ontario
Hespeler “New Hope” Wetland Interpretive Outdoor Classroom
An outdoor classroom will be created as part of an ongoing effort to enhance and restore a large urban wetland that is connected to a Provincially Significant Wetland.

Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources, Birdtail Sioux First Nation Reserve, Manitoba
Community Protection of Birdtail Creek Fish Habitat
Fish habitat will be restored at the ecologically important region where the Birdtail Creek enters the Assiniboine River. Local volunteers will be trained to monitor water quality and conduct macroinvertebrate sampling.

Nickel District Conservation Foundation, Sudbury, Ontario
Sudbury Children’s Water Festival
A two day festival will teach grade 3 children about the importance of water in their lives.

The Jim Gillespie Hammond River Conservation Fund, Nauwigewauk, New Brunswick
Putting Down Roots
Local students will design and construct a Living Willow Green Space. Willow trees will be planted and plied and this enviro-arts project will be used as a demonstration site to highlight riparian vegetation.

Habitat Acquisition Trust, Victoria, British Columbia
Good Neighbours Millstream Watershed
Public outreach events, such as tours, workshops and work parties, will educate local residents on how they can reduce negative impacts on Millstream Creek and help support this important ecosystem in their neighbourhood.

Tofino Streamkeepers, Tofino, British Columbia
Centennial Creek Restoration Project
The project will restore the riparian area and stabilize the banks along a creek that was historically an ideal habitat for spawning salmon and trout species. A two-day Streamkeeper training course will use the creek as a classroom.

Gananoque River Watershed Community Stewardship Project
A comprehensive stewardship workshop and rehabilitation demonstration will raise awareness about aquatic and shoreline habitat conservation among local residents and lake association members.

Nature Conservancy of Canada, St. John’s, Newfoundland
Codroy Estuary Community Conservation Program
Training opportunities will engage local residents in estuary conservation through workshops on plant and bird identification at the Codroy Estuary Nature Preserve.

Natural History Society of Newfoundland Labrador, St. John’s, Newfoundland
An Introduction to Stream Ecology at the Fluvarium
A public educational course will cover stream hydrology, stream morphology, sources of nutrients, types and adaptations of invertebrates, fish fauna, relationships of the fish fauna to their habitats and competitive interactions, conservation and restoration techniques.

This project is the final phase in a long process of rehabilitation of la rivière à Mars. Native trees and shrubs will be planted along the final kilometre of the river which will create and enhance habitat for salmon and trout.

Conservation Learning Centre Inc., Prince Albert, Saskatchewan
Slope Stabilization and Pollinator Habitat Expansion
Shrubs and alfalfa will be planted in unmanaged areas adjacent to research plots to eliminate the leaching of herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers into local wetlands and provide a habitat for native pollinators. A study course and teaching tools will be created to highlight the project.

Wildsight, Kimberley, British Columbia
Healthy Water for Healthy Communities – Lake Windermere Project
This project will be an education campaign to follow up on an expressed need for information on maintaining septic systems, concerns about boat traffic, aquatic plant growth, shoreline and upland development, water conservation and water quality.
