A native plant garden will be part of the revitalization of a 12-unit residential complex, providing a soothing place to rest, reflect, meet and socialize. With the guidance of elders, this project will incorporate traditional teachings into gardening activities, promoting residents’ sense of independence and self-esteem.

Vermicompost, Greenhouse and Cover Crop Pilot Project
This project will create a greenhouse to grow vegetables and to hold vermicomposting bins. It will generate jobs, provide a training and demonstration site for community members, and divert waste — convert it into vibrant, high quality soil and compost for community use.

Connecting the Greens: Building Capacity in Halifax’s North End Community Gardens
This project will link five unique community gardens in Halifax’s North End. Each garden will benefit from added capacity, according to their needs, ranging from compost bins to a tool library, native trees and plants, a garden shed, a rain-water collection system and a community bulletin board.

Habitat Restoration and Trail Improvements
This project will restore globally rare oak savannah habitat by reintroducing its defining vegetation to one of the few surviving oak savannah fragments in southern Ontario. The restoration is a necessary first step to the reintroduction of the endangered Karner Blue Butterfly.

Reesor Wetland Restoration Once restored, the Reesor Wetland will purify more than 30 million litres of water per year, which will reduce flooding and erosion. Volunteers will be trained to participate in native tree, shrub and wildflower plantings and will create ponds, nesting islands, bird boxes and log perches.

Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds School Ground Greening Grants
The Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds Program has awarded a total of $220,000 to 129 schools and daycares across Canada through the generous support of Toyota Canada Inc. and its dealerships, BMO Financial Group, the RBC Foundation, Capital One, Walmart Canada, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, the Lyle S. Hallman Foundation, Green Street and an anonymous foundation. Schools were able to apply for up to $2,000 and daycares up to $1,000 to create vibrant, natural learning environments and increase shade on their school grounds.
