Working Together for the Environment

It's about making the right choices.

The environment is an important issue. At Fido we’re taking steps to help our customers make the right choices and reduce their ecological impact. These steps will also help us reduce our own impact. In 2009, thanks to customers who subscribed to the Online Billing program, we were able to save over 3.62 tonnes of paper. That’s a significant increase from 1.06 tonnes the year before. Proceeds from the billing program are donated to our partner Evergreen.

Here are the concrete results of our partnership:

  • 29,900 trees planted in 48 communities across the country = approximately 11 hectares of greened space.
  • Over 11,000 volunteers participated in over 247 events in 2009 alone.

Not Taking Trees for Granted
Arctic Students Visit Downsview Park

By Colin Lacey, Stewardship Co-ordinator, West GTA, Evergreen

Last spring, high school students all the way from John Arnalukjuak High School in Arviat, Nunavut, made their mark on Toronto by planting trees in Downsview Park's Canada Forest. In town thanks to an exchange program with the YMCA Academy, these students in Grades 9 to 11 made time to help transform this former military site into a healthy ecosystem that will mature over the next 50 years.

Arviat, a hamlet of 1,800 people on the west shore of Hudson's Bay, is only accessible by plane, snowmobile and seasonally by boat. For many of the students, not only was it the first time visiting Canada's largest city, but the first time they had ever been far enough south to walk on grass and stand in the shade of a towering tree.

Curious and eager to explore the environment, these students paid more attention to their natural surroundings than other urban groups that come to plant with Evergreen Common Grounds. We walked really slowly across the grass, feeling how soft it was. Then we stood under trees, examining pinecones and other seed pods like burrs. When it came time to get busy planting trees, the students delighted in digging in thawed ground, and, for a brave few, unearthing and holding worms.

The students were amazed to learn that the hemlock we were planting would live for 600 years. They were truly leaving behind a legacy of nature for future generations. Since 2006, 40,000 trees have been planted in the Canada Forest. It's significant that we have groups coming from as far away as Nunavut to help plant the park. Our partnership with Downsview Park really focuses on creating opportunities for community involvement as the restoration project unfolds. Working with youth from downtown Toronto and an Arctic community really captures what we are trying to doing here—building far-reaching community ties to make this a truly national park.
